about

It started with me wanting to limit myself, just to create a bigger challenge. So I decided i should make a whole tape with the Teenage Engineer Pocket Operator PO-33 K.O.

I started digging for some nice samples on youtube and came across this wonderful album by my favourite composer Yuji Ohno. I started with flipping the first song. Recorded it to one of the pads on the SP-303. That turned out really nice so I just kept going. Made the first 3 songs in 2 hours and felt great. I let that stew for a couple of days and then made the next 2.

First I was thinking in the lines, “this could be something to perform live” (because I recorded the songs to the 303). Played the first 5 songs to two friends and they seemed to like it. But that’s when I decided it should be a tape.

First goal was to fill the 8 pads in bank C on the 303. So I made 3 more songs. But after a conversation with some of my fellow producers in the Sample Rumble chat I decided to aim for 14 songs instead.

Made the following 6 songs in one sitting of approximately 5 hours.

It was in my mind the whole time that this should be a Bandcamp release. And I knew there was a Bandcamp Friday coming up so that became the deadline.

Because of the limitations of the PO and SP I did all the mixing on the go. So now there was only mastering left.

But during this process I felt there’s was something missing. I wanted to add some voice samples to the tracks. Not just keeping them full instrumental. Took me a while to come up with the idea but when it hit me, I knew it was the right move.

The PO-33 has an extension on the name. The “K.O.”. Knock out! And what is more K.O. then the classic fighting game Tekken. So I dug around the internet and found some great voice rips from the first Tekken game I played as a kid, Tekken 2. (Shout out to Xinos).

So every song has voice samples from our favourite characters like Yoshimitsu, Lee, Michelle, Heihachi, etc. And I also decided to pick the song names from combos from there characters. Can you figure out which song is which character?

I hope you enjoy this tape! (and kick some ass while doing it 😅)

Much love.
